Deaf Art Celebration at Michigan School for the Deaf
The Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) recently hosted an inspiring Deaf Art Celebration, D.A.I.R. - Deaf Artist in Residence, on March 14, 2025, highlighting the power of art to bridge experiences and foster connections within the Deaf community. The event featured Jon Savage, an acclaimed Deaf artist from California, whose vivid and meaningful artwork captivated students, staff, and guests alike.
The Origins of D.A.I.R.
Since 1989, when a group of visionary Deaf individuals came together to create the D.A.I.R. manifesto, the Deaf View/Image Art (De’VIA) movement has emerged as a vibrant expression of Deaf culture. DAIR - Deaf Artist in Residence events, like the one hosted by MSD, continue this tradition by inviting artists who embody the spirit of Deaf artistic expression. This year marked the fifth time MSD welcomed an artist to the Michigan School for the Deaf Art Celebration.
Jon Savage: An Artist’s Journey
Jon Savage’s artistic journey began with a whimsical childhood moment—holding a lollipop while spinning in his mother’s beautician chair, marveling at the colorful stripes reflected through the thin candy. This simple yet profound experience laid the foundation for the colorful striped patterns seen throughout his contemporary art.
Born hearing to a hearing family in 1972, Jon lost his hearing at 11 months due to spinal meningitis. As he grew, Jon discovered a sense of belonging among other Deaf children, and his artistic passion continued to evolve. Over the years, Jon has embraced diverse creative roles, including stage photography, video editing, cinematography, acting, and painting. His work, rich with symbolism and vibrant colors, reflects his unique experiences as a Deaf artist.

Jon is the kind of person who lights up every room he enters, brimming with unstoppable energy and passion. Everything about him—his flashy hat, playful style, and bold mustache—seems to say, “I’m here to have a good time!” Adventurous, he enthusiastically chases new experiences, never settling for the ordinary. His laughter and zest for life are infectious, drawing people in and encouraging them to embrace the fun. Yet beneath all that flair is a profoundly authentic spirit: genuine, warm-hearted, and always ready to reach out to others. Simply put, he is joy, he is laughter, and he is friend and love.
Deaf Art and Inspiration at MSD

During his week-long residency at MSD, Jon worked closely with students to create a collaborative artwork titled “Hands of Unity,” a mural of three canvases depicting the four seasons. The colorful stripes flowing through the piece symbolize the ever-changing cycles of nature, while the tree trunks and branches, made from images of Jon’s own arms, convey a sense of growth and unity.
Jon’s poetic storytelling and thoughtful explanations behind each brushstroke inspired students. Jon’s visit enriched the students’ artistic skills and fostered a deeper connection to Deaf culture and creativity. Kayla Sturdivant, the art teacher and D.A.I.R. committee member, had the pleasure of working alongside Jon and the students for an unforgettable week of immersion into Deaf art.
Judy Lowrie’s Creative Contributions
The event also featured JudyAnn McClain-Lowrie's remarkable work, whose unique 3D art pieces captivated attendees. Judy’s imaginative creations—crafted with Crayola crayons—depict colorful animals, butterflies, peacocks, and intricate shapes. Her innovative use of materials and vibrant designs added a dynamic element to the celebration.
Vendors and Community Involvement
The Deaf Art Celebration at MSD was a showcase of artistic talent and a community gathering that brought together local vendors and creatives. Guests had the opportunity to visit various booths offering a range of unique products and crafts. A local bakery provided delicious loaves of bread. The Superintendent Cottage Historical Society (SCHS) presented displays, offered cards, books, crafts, and memorabilia, and celebrated the rich heritage of the Deaf community.
Candy vendors delighted attendees with colorful confections, while craft enthusiasts showcased handmade items, including beautifully crafted woodwork. Adding to the literary spirit of the event, author Kathleen Marcath shared her book, My Monster Truck Goes Everywhere with Me—Illustrated in American Sign Language by Deaf artist Isaac Liang, engaging visitors with stories and signed copies.

The presence of these local vendors enriched the experience and highlighted the spirit of collaboration and support within the Deaf community. The various offerings added a festive and welcoming atmosphere, making the event truly memorable.
A Memorable Evening
The celebration brought the community together to appreciate the creativity and resilience of Deaf artists. Attendees enjoyed refreshments, admired student art displays, and participated in a raffle, where a beautiful purple and teal peacock quilt by Kathy Derderian was the coveted prize. Though not the lucky winner, the experience left everyone with lasting memories and a renewed sense of artistic purpose.
In the words of one attendee, “Jon’s passion and fluency in storytelling through art were enchanting. The way he integrates symbolism into his work is both profound and eloquent.”
MSD’s Deaf Art Celebration inspires students and the community, reminding everyone that art is not just a form of expression—it’s a bridge to understanding and celebrating Deaf culture. I can't wait to see who the guest artist will be in 2028!
